The purpose of this guide is to show you how to install a USB cable driver on a Windows machine. There are two parts to the process: Part One: Determine if your PC has a USB port by opening the Device Manager. If it does, then proceed to Part Two. If not, then continue reading below. Part Two: Download and install the appropriate driver for your motherboard's chipset, which should be found using Google or your motherboard manual's website. Remember that there can be multiple drivers for each chipset and only one will work for you - trial and error is all we can do here! Double-click on the downloaded file. If you get an installation warning, click "Skip". Follow the prompts to install the USB drivers. Part One: Determine if your PC has a USB port by opening the Device Manager. If it does, then proceed to Part Two. If not, then continue reading below. See here for how to open Device Manager if your PC doesn't have one. This part of the process is only needed if you are trying to install into a computer that has never had a USB port before (i.e., before you built it yourself), or if you have just added a new internal USB card. USB ports are most often found in computers with a chipset from VIA or Intel. VIA's chipsets can be identified with the prefix "VT64xxxx" and Intel's by the prefix "9xx". See here for more information: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Common_chipsets Other Chipset manufacturers: Intel, VIA, nVidia...etcThe above article/section was written by one of the hardware wiki editors (the original author is probably long gone). The reason why it can't be moved to the Wiki is that it isn't written as a step-by-step guide, and for obvious reasons we don't want to teach people how to install bootloaders on their computers. --Misfit138 01:43, 6 June 2011 (CEST) The above article/section was also originally posted by me. I still think it's worth keeping because the advice about using the chipset manufacturer website is still valid. I could not find any reference to this information on the Gentoo Wiki homepage or in its contents, so I did not think it would be helpful to move it there. --Gen2ly 20:02, 22 April 2014 (UTC) It would probably be possible to move this information to the laptop page, where people may need to do similar things with laptops that don't have an internal USB port or an ExpressCard slot. cfa1e77820
